In this paper, I seek to\nevaluate the portrayal of blindness, and, more broadly, the impaired body in John Milton\u2019s\ndramatic poem Samson Agonistes. What I wish to evaluate is that impairment in the drama is a\nnatural condition which occurs to an unstable, fragile human body which equally fragile social\nnorms are built upon; the grey-area which Samson\u2019s impaired body occupies makes these social\nnorms clear, as well as their exclusion of disabled subjects. Using Lennard Davis\u2019s social model\nof disability, Rosemarie Garland-Thomson\u2019s ideas of staring, and Mitchell and Snyder\u2019s\nnarrative prosthesis, I wish to show that in a drama concerned with the relationship of spectator\nand spectacle, reaffirming normalcy occurs through reinforcing familiar tropes which ascribe\nmeanings onto the defamiliarized body. Ultimately, Milton\u2019s drama suggests that imposing\nmeaning onto impairments can itself be disabling."},{"label":"dcterms.available","value":"2018-01-01"},{"label":"dcterms.contributor","value":"Committee members: Dunn, Patricia"},{"label":"dcterms.creator","value":"Johnson, Ashley Lynn"},{"label":"dcterms.date","value":"2018"},{"label":"dcterms.dateAccepted","value":"2019-12-06T17:25:51Z"},{"label":"dcterms.dateSubmitted","value":"2019-12-06T17:25:51Z"},{"label":"dcterms.description","value":"Department of English"},{"label":"dcterms.extent","value":"47 pages"},{"label":"dcterms.format","value":"application/pdf"},{"label":"dcterms.issued","value":"2018-01-01"},{"label":"dcterms.language","value":"en"},{"label":"dcterms.provenance","value":"Made available in DSpace on 2019-12-06T17:25:51Z (GMT).
