In the first part, I will identify the elements that make up professional wrestling as a type of theatrical performance by closely examining the performance space, form of storytelling, character development, gender among the performers, and the role of non-physical intervening characters. By identifying these elements, it will show that professional wrestling is not just two men or women fighting in within a roped off square, but that it is unique theatrical performance that combines both acting and rehearsed physical combat. As this thesis progresses, it switches focus from the actor and their performance to topics revolving around the spectator. First, it will identify the group dynamics that are present in spectating this type of performance which create a unique and alternate type of spectatorship in comparison to sit-down theatre type performance. This thesis will incorporate theories of spectatorship and provide research on social cognition present in spectators of professional wrestling to justify the reactions that the performance evokes out of its spectators. This thesis will conclude with a case study from the authors perspective. The study was performed on April 2nd, 2017, at WWE\u2019s WrestleMania 33, in Orlando, Florida, where over 75,000 spectators viewed a seven-hour performance of Professional Wrestling.
