The historical context is explored to show the influence of these artists on human emotions and social movements. The power of these songs added support to the changing political and social structures of the American culture. The civil rights movement, the women's liberation movement, the Kent State shootings, the Vietnam War, the gay movement, the gas shortages and much more were addressed through this art form. The songs that were created during this time supported the changes happening in the United States of America by these various movements resulting in social change. As we explore the current events and music of the folk-rock period the understanding of the historical past and its contribution and impact to American Musical Theater is presented. The singer songwriters influenced the culture by their commercial success.
