Using survey \ndata from former professional baseball and football players as well as \nlengthy follow-up interviews, I sought to identify factors that \ninfluence this transition process and determine whether there are \ncommonalities among those who make this transition with relative ease or \ndifficulty. The study considered such factors as: career length, the \nathlete's educational attainment, how the athlete's career \nended, the extent to which the athlete clings to his previous identity, \nand the differences in the sports' organizational structures. I \nalso drew upon selected memoirs of former professional players and the \nwork of other sociological and social psychological studies of athletes \nto present some insights into the emotionally charged and intensely \npersonal experience of losing one's central identity and the \ndifficulties in replacing it. I also introduce the concept of \n'the nostalgic self' as an alternative to both the \n'abandoned self' and 'not yet abandoned self' as \na way in which former athletes retain a portion of their former identity \nwithout either renouncing their past or holding onto it so tightly that \nit prevents their moving forward. The study found only modest support \nfor whether the respondents' educational attainment and how their \nathletic career ended had a relationship with the ease of their \ntransition into a new career identity. There was, however, a striking \ndifference in the experiences between athletes of different generations. \nThese differences seem to be attributable to the significant changes in \nprofessional sports brought about by free agency. The project's \nresults also point to possible future areas of study regarding the \ntransition."},{"label":"dcterms.available","value":"2015-04-24T14:45:35Z"},{"label":"dcterms.contributor","value":"Goodman, Norman , Feldman, \nKenneth A"},{"label":"dcterms.creator","value":"Anderson, Maria"},{"label":"dcterms.dateAccepted","value":"2015-04-24T14:45:35Z"},{"label":"dcterms.dateSubmitted","value":"2015-04-24T14:45:35Z"},{"label":"dcterms.description","value":"Department of Sociology"},{"label":"dcterms.extent","value":"164 pg."},{"label":"dcterms.format","value":"Application/PDF"},{"label":"dcterms.identifier","value":"http://hdl.handle.net/1951/59566"},{"label":"dcterms.issued","value":"2012-05-01"},{"label":"dcterms.language","value":"en_US"},{"label":"dcterms.provenance","value":"Made available in DSpace on 2013-05-22T17:34:04Z (GMT).
