I analyze the historical relocation of these musical forms as symbols of Peruvianness during the period 1920 to 1960. I argue that the idea of the existence of a national music called m\u00a3sica criolla emerged as a product of the urban modernization that had been transforming the landscape of the city of Lima since the second half of the nineteenth century. Faced with this transformation, early twentieth-century Lime\u00a4o intellectuals asserted that Lime\u00a4os displayed distinctive artistic attitudes in their daily lives. For them, the best example of these attitudes was the practice of m\u00a3sica criolla, which they argued embodied the authentic mood of the city. In the 1950's, several Lime\u00a4o writers began to stress that m\u00a3sica criolla was the typical musical practice of the city, different not only from foreign musical practices but also from the musical practices of the Andean immigrants who began to arrive to Lima en masse in the 1940's."},{"label":"dcterms.available","value":"2012-05-15T18:03:41Z"},{"label":"dcterms.contributor","value":"Patterson, Zabet"},{"label":"dcterms.creator","value":"G\u00a2mez, Luis Martin"},{"label":"dcterms.dateAccepted","value":"2015-04-24T14:45:29Z"},{"label":"dcterms.dateSubmitted","value":"2012-05-15T18:03:41Z"},{"label":"dcterms.description","value":"Department of History"},{"label":"dcterms.format","value":"Monograph"},{"label":"dcterms.identifier","value":"http://hdl.handle.net/1951/55439"},{"label":"dcterms.issued","value":"2010-12-01"},{"label":"dcterms.language","value":"en_US"},{"label":"dcterms.provenance","value":"Made available in DSpace on 2015-04-24T14:45:29Z (GMT).
