When he returns in 1777, he finds his childhood hometown of Mattituck, New York, much changed by the British occupation. A faithful subject, he clings to his belief that the colonies shouldn't separate from England until the number of abuses suffered by neighbors, friends and family at the British army's hands become too great to ignore.
